Looking at this picture below, is this what most people think about when infrastructure is mentioned?
Was that extreme as an example? It does seem to properly explain the word though; which means the basic physical and organizational structures and facilities (e.g. buildings, roads, power supplies) needed for the operation of a society or enterprise.
What most people and nations fail to understand is the importance of good infrastructure. You can be from any country and claim to have the best people and talents. The top countries will always have one thing in common, it works. A country with one genius and a way for him to realize his potential is worlds apart from one with a hundred geniuses with no way to get to where they need to go. This is how a country works and yet this model is highly scalable. Take your office for example. What do you think of this image:
Does this look any different than buildings and roads outside the office? The accessibility to the printer, for example, could result in a loss or gain of productivity substantially. Don't believe us? An office has 100 staff. Each staff on average takes 20 seconds to get to the printer. So 40 seconds is spent walking. 40 X 100 = 4000 sec if each staff prints one thing per day. 20 days workday per month equal to 240 days of work, let's make it 210 should each worker has 30 days of leave. 266 hours of work in your office per year just to talk to the printer. Now, let's move that printer to a location where it would take only 15 seconds instead of 20. Time spent is now reduced to 30 seconds. 175 hours of work is not used, so you have saved almost 100 hours of labor from that slight adjustment. Do note that we were very generous with these assumptions. Your employees print numerous papers per day and your organization may not allocate 30 days of annual leave. Not taking into account employees queuing at printers and waiting for printouts.
It makes one think of how important the job of office manager really is and to consider how truly important to your operation a good infrastructure would be.
